Happy #SimulationFriday! Aviation gas turbines, also known as jet engines, are a crucial pillar of global connectivity because of their contribution to efficient and rapid air travel. In this video, we showcase our previous simulation of an aviation gas turbine using CONVERGE’s autonomous meshing and accurate combustion modeling. This single-sector combustor case represents a high-power condition and includes wall effusion cooling holes. To simulate the combustion of Jet-A fuel, we used the Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) model. Additionally, CONVERGE’s Adaptive Mesh Refinement effectively captured the flow through the effusion cooling holes. The video displays the streamlines in the casing and the combustor, as well as wall temperatures and an isosurface of OH, representing the flame front. This case is one of the example cases available in CONVERGE Studio, the graphical user interface included with a CONVERGE license. Setup files for this case, and many other gas turbine cases, allow you to conduct parametric studies to determine the sensitivity of spray, combustion, heat transfer, and turbulence models on practical measures such as NOx emissions, flame shape, and wall and exit profile temperatures. A few days ago, I watched a video about toroidal propellers released by MIT Lincoln Lab. They claimed that the propeller emits very little noise. Then, I wondered if I could use that for a wind turbine, which I noticed does emit quite a loud noise (a whooshing sound). Here is my preliminary design. Maybe, I will simulate this design in CFD software to see the formation of vortices as it goes to the tip compared to common turbine blade and maybe do some improvement.
