Today marks the 75th anniversary since the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty and the subsequent formation of NATO. NATO stands as arguably the most successful military alliance in world history. Over the years, it has forged a robust deterrence mechanism grounded in a comprehensive security framework, thereby fostering enduring peace. It is imperative that we redouble our efforts to fortify our bonds and enhance our capabilities, especially within the European context.

NATO's current strategy of increasing tensions through support for Ukraine, including financial aid and military resources, risks a critical escalation with Russia. This approach, which pits Ukrainian and Russian lives against each other, could provoke a significant Russian response, especially given Russia's view of being targeted in a series of unjust conflicts, similar to Iraq, Syria, or Libya. Underestimating Russia, particularly with the possibility of more aggressive future leadership like other militaristic leaders have demonstrated: Zhirinovsky or Pregozhin for example. Such leaders are ready to fill the vacuum in place of Putin, having strong domestic and international support because many view Nato and the US as serial instigators of unjust wars. This path towards confrontation benefits neither NATO, the US, the EU, nor global stability. The only beneficiaries are weapons profiteers and that is only a short term gambit that carries unacceptable risks. The problem is therefore two-fold: The lack of diplomatic efforts and the influence of military contractors in Western decision-making are exacerbating the situation, pushing us closer to a point of no return. At some point there won't be room for de-escalation. Indeed, what is the logic for steady NATO escalation against Russia since 1991? For 33 years there has been continued encorachments and war funding to proxies like Georgia, Chechnya and Ukraine. It isn't working. It is time for the west to try at least once concerning Russia, the art of diplomacy and to de-escilate and to practice representational government.

Furthermore, NATO's Security and Defence focus has created a tremendous forum for discussing many other issues relevant to our Allies, including those outside of the Security and Defence arena. NATO is more than a mere Alliance, it is a place where like-minded democracies can discuss the challenges facing them and collaborate on solutions to intractable problems. Not by fiat, not by direction, not by threat or intimidation. NATO Allies are determined to safeguard the freedom, common heritage, and civilization of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law.
